Shrove Tuesday aka Pancake Day

Who are we kidding? Every day should be pancake day but hey, if it really has to be elevated to a specific day that’s also cool.

Whilst I didn’t celebrate pancake day on the actual day (silly me), Robin thankfully made sure we paid tribute by serving pancakes on Sunday morning. So here’s a cheeky glimpse of how amazing they were.

Key ingredients to my favourite Robin pancakes?! Coconut yoghurt in the batter and that incredible streaky bacon from Friends of Ours (might be addicted to that bacon – you can order it via deliveroo).

On a more serious note though, I always wondered why Shrove Tuesday was celebrated with pancakes so this year I decided to actually google it (hurrah!). Apparently Shrove Tuesday, started out as a Pagan celebration (also hurrah!) but the religious association began because the day preceding Ash Wednesday presented an opportunity to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk and sugar before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. Ok so that makes sense it’s like eating all the naughty food just before you’re about to go pretty much vegan for 40 days. We have something similar in Greek culture only instead of pancakes we eat our body weight in barbecued meat … ! Literally.
